Most important, the 70-kVp protocol resulted in a 34% decrease in radiation dose compared with a standard protocol with 120-kVp settings. In the past, CT systems allowed data acquisition with tube voltages ranging from 80–140 kVp.

For most anatomic regions, an accepted range of kVp provides an appropriate level of radiographic contrast. As long as the kVp selected is sufficient to penetrate the anatomic part, the kVp can be further manipulated to alter the radiographic contrast. Radiographs generally are not repeated because of contrast errors.

Tube voltage, in turn, determines the quantity and quality of the photons generated . An increase in kVp extends and intensifies the x-ray emission spectrum, such Major CT Parameters Affecting Dose. •Tube current (mA) •Tube voltage (kV) •Pitch. •Collimation.

2014-11-01 · Increasing kVp by 10 whilst halving mAs is considered to offer similar perceptual image quality when compared with the original exposure factors; this approach is referred to as the 10 kVp rule.6, 7 Importantly, application of the 10 kVp rule in manual mode for anthropomorphic chest phantom imaging, across a wide range of exposure factors, provides consistent dose reductions. 7 Allen et al. 7 A potential drawback of rapid kVp switching may be limited control of tube current for the two kVp settings, which may result in mismatched noise levels between the images acquired at each setting. The general limitation of all of these approaches to dual-energy CT is that the energy spectra generated by the sources are polychromatic with overlap of the low-energy spectra with the high-energy Radiology: Imaging Trauma Patients in a Deployed Setting CPG ID: 01 Guideline Only/Not a Substitute for Clinical Judgment 3 Extremity Injuries If extremity injury is suspected, radiographs can be obtained; however, these can be time-consuming and should not delay more diagnostic imaging with CT, if available (Role 3 and above). The resolution was measured with a "test pattern." By using a transmission densitometer, image contrast percentage was determined by a mathematical formula. In the first part of … The method presented here is different from others because of a few shortcuts that the technologist may find helpful.

kVp controls the property called "radiographic contrast" of an x-ray image (the ratio of transmitted radiation through regions of different thickness or density). Each body part contains a certain type of cellular composition which requires an x-ray beam with a certain kVp to penetrate it.

Pick three exposure settings: first, 300 mA for 1/60 sec (5 mAs) at 70 kVp; second, 300 mA at 1/120 sec (2.5 mAs) at 70 kVp; and third, 300 mA at 1/30 sec (10 mAs) at 70 kVp. One has double the mAs and one has half the mAs. The ASRT white paper advises ‘the best practice in digital imaging (for children) is to use the highest kVp within the optimal range for the position and part coupled with the lowest amount of mAs needed to provide an adequate exposure to the image receptor’.

A higher kVp setting allows for use of a lower mas setting. This would generally mean a short time of exposure. Type of X-ray Head.
